Compared to other Andaman islands the waters of Ko Tarutao are to murky to snorkel, but for most, the unspoilt beaches, waterfalls, great hiking and views more than compensate for this.

Ermita Ruins – Bohol, Philippines

The Ermita Ruins is one of the best Bohol Tourist Spots for travelers here in Bohol. The Ermita Ruins are the ruins of a coralline limestone structure built during the Spanish Regime in Bohol. It lies parallel to the nave of the St. Nicholas Tolentino Church in the town of Dimiao, Bohol. It was allegedly used as a military fortress, a chapel and a burial site of the members of the Spanish clergy that died here in Bohol. Archaeological excavations of The Ermita Ruins were done in 1995 and 1998 in a quest to uncover its mysterious past..
Ermita is a Spanish term for a small church or chapel in a lonely place.
In a study conducted by a team from the National Museum entitled “Archaeological Exposition of the 18th Century Structure, Ermita Ruins is an 18th century structure, which has the closest resemblance to Paco Cemetery, a historical site in Paco, Manila. Built in 1800 until 1815 by Fr. Enrique de Santo de Villanueva, it was constructed during the Spanish colonial period that has been abandoned and erected by a population that was willing to work for the church and the Ermita.
It has honeycombed-arranged tombs or sepulchers that are unique and so far, the only one found in the Philippines, which make up the walls of the Ermita.
The researchers were surprised why no graves were found in the tombs. To them, perhaps, it was constructed to serve not only as a Chapel, but also as a cemetery. But even before it was completed, it could be possible that a big catastrophic event occurred, an epidemic perhaps, which explains the mass burial, as evidenced by skeletons excavated from the ground, not properly arranged but just laid on top of the others.
On the other hand, researchers consider the idea that perhaps, the absence of bones in the hundreds of small niches (although there were few sets of bones recovered and transferred to the Municipal Cemetery) explained by the closure of the cemetery in 1844 by Fr. Manuel Carususan; its nearness to the church was deemed unhealthy.
The preservation of the Ermita Ruins is a joint project of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, the St. Nicholas Parish, and Local Government of Dimiao. The preservation is in accordance with the policies of the National Heritage Institute (NHI) to retain the antiquity of the place and preserve its natural beauty and attraction…

Danao Adventure Park, Bohol

The Danao Adventure Park is Bohol's newest tourist attraction located in the municipality of Danao in Bohol Province. Danao Bohol is a 5th class municipality subdivided into 17 barangays and has a population of roughly 20,000 people. It is ninety two kilometers or roughly 2 hrs drive from the province's capital, Tagbilaran City.

The Danao Adventure Park incorporated the river, caves, gorges and mountain ranges into it's eco-adventure tourism while carefully conserving it's ecosystem. It is an adventurer's perfect place to experience river kayaking and tubing, river trekking and boulder hopping, root climbing, rappelling, spelunking, and zip line, all of which are centered in the Wahig River. The park adds to the list of Bohol's famous attractions like the Chocolate Hills, the Philippine Tarsiers, and Panglao Island to name a few.

The Kamira Cave in Danao Adventure Park is one of the three caves in Danao declared as safe to explore by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The area where the cave is located is a sanctuary, protected by the municipality in a careful attempt to preserve the natural beauty of the place. Even at the cave site, only ropes are used to maneuver in and out of the cave which is 477 meters in length. Cave exploration usually last between 45 minutes to an hour.

Majestic stone formations will greet you at the entrance of the cave. Hanging from the ceilings are stalactites while on the ground are stalagmites. Most walls and boulders have flowstones that glitter when lights from flash lights, headlights and lamps shine on it. The water inside is icy cold and leads to a natural pool at the end of the cave that also has a fountain. The cave is also home to the different species of bats, and fresh water crabs.

The newest activity added in the Danao Adventure Park is the Zip Line which, in the adventure park, is called "Suislide". The zip line stretches to 480 meters long and traverses the Wahig River at 200 meters high. Another thrilling extreme adventure is The Plunge where one is secured on a cable and would have to do 45 meters free fall before being launched on a pendulum swing.

Another exhilarating activity in the Danao Adventure Park is riding the colorful kayaks and rubber tubing through the currents of the Wahig River. Trekking through the river and mountains as well as biking and enjoying nature in this part of Bohol is also a worthwhile activity and something to remember

Britania, San Agustin, Surigao del Sur

by Deomar Pandan

Off the town of San Agustin in the Philippines is hidden a beautiful paradise called the Britania Islands. Strewn over clear blue waters and rimmed with powdery white sand, the 24 islets of Britania are a perfect getaway for travelers wishing to escape to the beach and enjoy, not just swimming, but island-hopping as well.

What is the Britania Islands?

The Britania Islands is a group of 24 islets scattered off the coast of San Agustin in Surigao del Sur. Most islands are rock hills emerging out of the water and covered with trees and shrubs, although a wall of rock may be exposed here and there.

Most of Britania Islands are rimmed with beaches, or have a strip of sand on one side. The sand is fine and powdery, perfect for bathing or just dabbling on warm white sand. Many of the islets sit in a close cluster.
Hagonoy Island

A few of Britania Islands are different from the others in that they are not towering hills, but low-lying ridges of sand. Such islands have wild vegetation growing over the beautiful stretch of fine white sand, like the Hagonoy Island.
Naked Island
Naked Island
One of Britania Islands is a sandbar with no vegetation at all. The Naked Island is tailed with a long winding rocky shore. The long sandbar winds gracefully itself. The sand is gloriously white!

How many are the Britania Islands?

There are 24 islands in Britania, consisting mostly of small hills. Only 6 are frequented by tourists, but the boat that takes you island-hopping to these six islands would show you around the other islets, touring you among green mounds embraced by clear blue waters.

What can you find in the Britania Islands?

Pristine white sand will greet you in Britania islands. On par with Boracay and El Nido, the sands are fine, powdery and gloriously white. You’d love dabbling in the sand in Britania Islands.
Hagonoy Island

The water is magnificent in Britania Islands. There’s no trace of mud. The water is crystal clear. It’s as if you’re looking through glass.
Even further off the shores the water is still crystal clear. When the water goes emerald green, it’s crystal-clear. When it becomes sapphire blue, it’s crystal clear. When it goes raven black … well, you can’t see anything, but you know it’s clear.
The landscape beneath the waters of Britania Islands are as majestic as the undulating terrains above it. The water shifts easily from green to blue to black, and you know there’s a magical geography down there, beneath the crystal-clear surface: a seabed hilly and rolling as the coastline above it.

There’s also quite an array of rocky shores in Britania Islands. The sandy islands are tailed with rocky coasts. These rocky shores are a great place to find exotic shells.
The Naked Island after winding for quite a few footfalls (right) gives way to a rocky shore, which itself winds along for an even longer stretch (above).

The Hagonoy Island has it’s own rocky shore (below), lovingly visited by gangs of shell gatherers.

Not to be left out are the rock formations. Boslon Island showcases a milieu of rocks strewn around its shore. You hop over or skip along these rocks, or just lie down on the sand and bask against their background — your choice.
The Panlangagan Cave Island, with its caves and hollows, offers a terrific venue for caving.
Of course, we don’t forget that the Britania Islands itself is a mysterious and wonderful rock formation: Rolling hills rising off the mesmerizing waters of Lianga Bay.

What kind of geographic formation are the Britania Islands?

The Britania Islands is like a cross between the Hundred Islands in Pangasinan and the Chocolate Hills of Bohol. The islands are conical hills covered with vegetation, but they’re not scattered on land, like the Chocolate Hills, but over the sea, like the Hundred Islands.
In fact you see the same geographic formation right on the mainland of San Agustin: round hills, not covered by grass like the Chocolate Hills, but with lush forests.
Locals may not be aware of this, seeing as parts of the “islands” on land were quarried, particularly to make way for roads.
The geographic formation of the Britania Islands continues on land.

How do you enjoy the Britania Islands?

Oh, don’t go to Britania Islands and not bathe. The sand is exquisite. The water’s superb. The landscape beautiful. Can you resist going for a dip in the beach at all?
I know I didn’t. And I meant to go to Britania Islands only to take pictures.

Island-hopping among the many islands of Britania is also an activity you shouldn’t miss. You may, in addition, go snorkeling, caving and shell-gathering.
